Jesdyn has made Jesdyn's local description Neil is a Mercurian of Judgement who wears an honest-to-God halo when he's in Civis... which he isn't. He's probably not even in this session. William [to Jesdyn]: As per our discussion over email, you'll most likely be sitting out the rest of the arc, unless there's some reason to CelTongue you. I doubt we'll start the next arc today, either. Neil says, "I'm fine with that." fadethecat has made fadethecat's local description A young woman with long dark hair, and sparkly ribbons woven through it. She wears a sword on a belt at her waist, and there are ribbons along the belt as well. The GM says, "When last we faded to commercial, Thais and Ekur had just returned to Civis from a brief trip to Earth in chase of two young scamps. The trip took several hours, and upon return -- T-8 hours or so to Blandine's arrival -- the city is in a tense situation as friends of the offended party, one Anaba of the Navajo delegation, are outside City Hall demanding justice. Not helping the situation are a collection of Ethereals that would enjoy seeing a bit of blood in the streets." The GM says, "We pick up with Thais and Ekur having just encountered the border patrol in the bounding foothills of the Domain near Southgate, where they learned of this (and that the city is momentarily closed to further visitors)." Arc 3: Angels in Black, Men in White (conclusion) Ekur makes best speed for City Hall. Thais keeps close at Ekur's heels, and a wary eye out for trouble. The GM says, "The road from Southgate to what used to be Central passes by the Angel's Quarter on the left, and the remaining desert wilderness on the right. The Angel's Quarter is gripped with quiet, only angels with the armed services visible on streets as you pass. A murmur rises from the intersection of the Angels' Quarter and the Ethereals' Quarter ahead of you, steadily growing louder as you approach City Hall." The GM says, "When you arrive in the plaza outside City Hall, the tableau that meets your eyes is definitely a standoff. The Navajo ethereals are arranged in full uniform in the square outside Jack's old house and the new civic building." The GM says, "Several Malakim, Cherubim and Ofanim in celestial form are ranged around the two buildings. A crowd has gathered behind the Navajo. The energy is tense." Ekur dreamshapes himself a soapbox to stand on. Deciding that this is an opportune time to shock people into silence and attention, he stands on the soapbox, and with his best Acting roll to look angry, shouts "E-fucking-nough!" William [to StevenE]: Skill roll. Ekur rolled 14 versus 18 and succeeded by 4. Thais admires the soapbox, but only stands quietly behind him, looking her usual friendly self. William [to StevenE]: And do you look like an Elohite when you do this? StevenE [to William]: Yes. The GM says, "The crowd glances over at you. There is an audible "ooh" with the tone of 'hey, that's pretty unusual,' followed by conversational chattering. People are waiting expectantly for your next move." The GM says, "A couple of Malakim eye Ekur and visibly resonate him, relaxing after they do so." fadethecat [to StevenE]: Ah, when Elohite shout. It's effective! William . o O (Trying to think of what to do next?) Ekur says, "The Vodoun spirits that attacked the Dreamshade Anaba did go to Earth, but they were captured there and are currently in the custody of an Angel of Judgment, who is punishing them. Anaba will be released shortly, since he's done nothing wrong. So could you all move on about your ordinary business?" The GM says, "The crowd digests this for a moment and turns its attention, tennis-match-like, to the Navajo spirits." fadethecat [to William]: ...I'm now picturing Ekur in a tennis skirt, damn you. Nayanezgani confers briefly with some of his people. He looks up. "You have... effectively anticipated our demands. We will wait here until Anaba is released." Ekur nods, steps down, and heads inside. Thais follows along after Ekur, with one last glance over her shoulder at the assembled crowd outside. William [to fadethecat]: Several of them seem disappointed that there wasn't a fight. There's a few pixies and some of their relatives trying to stir up resentment about the loa being allowed to stay on Earth, but the tension level is palpably lower. Thais makes a note of those pesky pixies for later. "Inside the municipal building, several angels and ethereals of the more clerkly sort are staring out the windows or desultorily trying to get some work done. Sitting in a receiving area is he Navajo woman in the white dress who went with Anaba earlier. She stands up to meet you." Ekur nods to the spirit. "I apologize for the inconvenience, ma'am. It's been a while since I dealt with the corporeal, and I forgot how long it would be until we got back." Thais makes a polite, shallow bow to the spirit, but lets Ekur do the speaking. He's so good at it. The cornsilk woman says, "I quite understand. I am sorry I could not do more to quell the disturbance myself; I could only say what I saw, which was that the young loa had disappeared and you had pursued. And that Anaba was being held but, of course, in entirely commodious conditions." The cornsilk woman says, "For the purpose of better establishing my client's circumstances, could you elaborate on the current situation of the fugitives?" Ekur says, "We do now know what was happening. The loa had a sorcerer, and they attempted to have the sorcerer push Anaba along from his current state. The sorcerer summoned them, so they had to go. They are now bound for a time by that sorcerer, and then angel of Judgment that was with us is punishing them." Ekur says, "I also got a promise from the sorcerer that, at least for a month, he will not try to push Anaba along. That should be time enough to finish your business here and take him to a realm he'd be safe in. If, of course, he hasn't moved on along of his own accord by then." The cornsilk woman says, "I believe he is reconsidering his stay with us as we speak." She seems sad about this. "I have a duty to my superiors to try to persuade him to stay, but ultimately it is his choice. His jailors asked me to leave when it seemed he was becoming upset. Would you please look in on him and convey my request to know how he is doing?" Ekur says, "Yes, I will. Oh, at this point, those over me probably think I should deliver a lecture about harboring dreamshades. Consider that incorporated by this reference." The cornsilk woman bows slightly. "Your message and its nuances are cordially received." Ekur nods, and asks whoever's in charge around here to be taken to Anaba. William [to Ekur]: For all practical purposes at the moment, that's you -- higher city officials are over in City Hall, Jack's place -- and a police angel takes you to a room on the third floor with comfortable furnishings, a view of the nearby city, and a Kyriotate maintaining a Song of Celestial Shields. Anaba is inside, looking out the window. Ekur says, "Hello, Anaba. I hope this hasn't been too much of an inconvenience for you." Thais offers a bow to Anaba equal to the one she gave the spirit earlier, and stands slightly behind Ekur. Ekur auto-resonates Anaba. Anaba is silent for a moment. He dreamshapes a cigarette and takes a puff. "You know what really sucks about being dead? You can't smoke. You're also not physically addicted any more, thank God, but you still want a smoke and the best you can do is pretend to taste it." He looks back. "You guys can come in, come in." He waves you in to the room. "Most comfortable lockup I've ever been in." William [to Ekur]: Anaba is extremely conflicted at the moment, fear and multiple duties. Thais steps inside, and nods to him. "Thank you." Anaba sighs. "Still a reservation, though, isn't it. Even if it's comfy." Ekur says, "Your advocate is concerned about how you are doing. We're here to let you go, and the spirits in the street are waiting to see you." Anaba smiles. "Silk's a nice girl. You should see her when she's not in uniform. I honestly think she'd really miss me if I decided to leave, and she's not just saying it to get me to stay." Anaba drops the smile. "I suppose I should see them again. They really ought to see that I'm doing okay." Ekur says, "What do you want, Anaba?" Anaba turns around and meets your eyes. "I'd like not to die again. I'm due to reincarnate, did you know? That means I forget most of the life I led this time, I'm told." Anaba says, "Guess that's why I held on as a dreamshade. It's nice to be convinced that your gods need you." Anaba vanishes the cigarette. "Okay. I'll go see 'em." Ekur nods in what he hopes is an understanding way. "Thank you. And though I don't believe you can get what you want, I do hope you get something you can be happy with." Ekur steps aside to let Anaba take the lead out of the cell. Anaba heads for the door. As you head down, he says, "Do you... have a place where I can stay until Blandine makes her appearance? It'd be neat to see an Archangel. And I don't think I'll be staying with the delegation any more." Ekur says, "A place can be arranged. And if you'd like, I'd be honored to have you as a guest when my promotion ceremony occurs." Anaba says, "Thanks. That sounds nice." Momentarily, a U.S. military uniform of antiquated design replaces the human street clothes he is wearing. Ekur says, "Myself, I wish that it were Beleth promoting me. But several thousand years ago, I learned I wouldn't get what I wanted. I have gotten something that makes me happy." The GM says, "You come to the lobby, where Cornsilk waits." Silk comes over to Anaba. He shakes his head slowly, and she pauses. She says, "Don't you like staying with us?" Anaba says, "I like being Navajo. I wish I could stay. But the reservation life has just gotten too small." Anaba heads for the front door and steps outside. Ekur tells a uniform to arrange a place for Anaba to stay in Civis for a while. Ekur then follows Anaba out to the street. Silk, inside, turns to Thais. Thais pauses, looking to Silk. Silk says, "It may be possible to grant Anaba's wish. My superiors would accept half a loaf rather than losing him entirely. Heaven's view on the matter is not clear to me, since it is an expressed desire of his and he is already with us. We could forge a Soul Link between him and one of us; sometimes they survive reincarnation." Silk says, "He may not be born Navajo again, but we could find him." fadethecat [to William]: Do I know what Heaven's policy about Soul Links is? William [to fadethecat]: Believe it or not, they're technically legal. A Soul Link allows the human to demand a service of the ethereal. It's only a problem if it's used for the human to send Essence to the ethereal -- which is, of course, its most common use. So, technically legal but with the potential for abuse. William [to fadethecat]: If you think about it for a moment, their primary purpose would be presumably to reintroduce him to their priesthood. fadethecat [to William]: And since they're not really a religion we frown on... Not likely to be something we'd fuss about, especially given the greater chance he'd choose to move on as we want, right? William [to fadethecat]: You would not be breaking any laws of Heaven or Civis to allow her to suggest it. The ethical content of the decision is entirely up to you. Laurence would probably disapprove, of course. If it makes it easier for Anaba to move on, though, that would be in the move's favor. William Meta query. Is this style of guidance helpful, frustrating, etc.? I'm trying to give as much legal and political information as I can while letting Thais make her decision on her own. fadethecat [to William]: It's useful. That's about the information I wanted. Thais tends to be fairly by-the-book, but once she knows what the book says, she can figure things out within that framework. William [to Thais]: You can also, of course, see how much the potential for its misuse is weighing in Silk's current state of mind... :^) fadethecat [to William]: ...oh, point. Resonating! Thais rolled 17d6 and got 62. roll 3d6 On 3d6, you rolled 11. fadethecat [to William]: ...right, letting you roll. Neil . o O ( Thais rolls 6d6 and gets 36. "... okay, Lucifer squashes you flat and crushes the Kingdom of Heaven." ) William [to Thais]: Among other information, you gather that professional duty (preserve our nation's resources, especially its people) coincides with personal desire. She, personally, would be willing to be quite altruistic about the bond if that would help her keep an eye on Anaba. The GM says, "I.e., no dramatic 'you are our priest reborn' speeches, just 'you were Navajo in a past life, and we were friendly.'" Thais nods, fingers playing with the hilt of her sword for a moment. "No laws of Heaven forbid this. While there is potential for abuse of the link"--she does not try to clarify what she means by 'abuse' in this context--"I do believe it would be an acceptable choice, especially if it let Anaba move on as we would like. You've already discussed this possibility with him, then?" Silk says, "It's been mentioned, but only as a last resort. We didn't want him thinking we were hurrying him along." Silk says, after a pause, "I've... worked out how to make one myself." Her icon doesn't blush, but you could swear.... Thais smiles. "Well. We have at least a month to decide, before any issues with that sorceror comes up. No need for hurrying, still. I'd like to discuss the issue with a few friends who know more about this sort of thing than I do, and if you'd like to bring it up directly with him, that would be very helpful. I'd like to resolve this matter to the best of everyone's satisfaction as we can. While we can't have everything... there are compromises that are better than nothing, yes." Silk bows politely. "Most certainly." The GM says, "Outside, the crowd has reacted in a satisfied fashion as Anaba stepped out of the door. The Navajo spirits cheer, and Nayanezgani steps forward, beckoning. Anaba stops where he is, though, and the cheers turn to surprise." Anaba announces, "I... could go with you if I wanted to." Anaba pauses, then says, "I'm not... sure... I still want to." Nayanezgani glances over at Ekur. "What did you say to him?" Anaba says, "This is my choice. It always has been." Ekur says, "I said he was free to go, and asked him what he wanted. If you'd like me to summon a Seraph, I will." Nayanezgani lets his hand drop. "We don't want to lose you. There are so few of our people left. Especially priests." The GM says, "The crowd nods. A lot of ethereals know how that feels." Anaba flinches. Ekur, you can feel his conflict intensifying. He says, "I'm thinking about it. Look, whatever else happens I'll have the opportunity to meet her. If I get the chance I'll deliver your petition." He turns and goes back inside. William [to Ekur]: The Malakite standing at your left says to you very quietly, "If you can get the crowd to figure the show's over somehow we'd really appreciate it." Ekur says, "Thank you all for your concern, but this is now pretty clearly a private decision of Anaba's. If you could all resume your normal business, please, so preparations for later tonight could go forward?" There is a moment's pause, until a woman's voice calls out, "You two owe me money anyway." The crowd sighs with release of tension, and people start going about their errands. Jane, who was the one who called out, winks at Ekur and mouths, "You owe me one." Ekur nods to Jane. The Navajo spirits, at Nayanezgani's sign, put away their weapons and leave the square, presumably to return to their camp. The fairies try to grumble some more, but other ethereals just tell them to shut up. Thais strides over towards Ekur. "There's something I need to discuss with you, once you have a spare moment." Ekur says, "Oh?" Thais glances about. "Possibly in a more private location. I'd prefer to ask Neil as well, but as he won't be back for some time, I can get your opinion first." Ekur nods, and takes Thais to wherever his liason office is. The GM says, "Upstairs, same building. View of the square from the second floor." Ekur looks out on the square, and auto-resonates a few people he sees, to make sure nothing seems to be building back up. Thais takes a seat in the office, adjusting the sword at her side out of habit as she sits. "Do you have any experience with Soul Bonds?" William [to Ekur]: Nope, things seem to be quieting down. Ekur says, "Some. The bonded Ethereal has to do favors requested by the human, and the human can send the Ethereal essence. We try to avoid both sides, usually." Ekur says, "Other than that, it's like the Djinn resonance on the part of the Ethereal." Thais nods. "I've been told that the Navajo spirits would like to try a Soul Bond with Anaba, so that they can find him after reincarnation, if he chooses to move on. I'm led to believe he's in favor of this, and that it would make him more amenable to moving on to his next life. The honor of the one who suggested it was clear, and she said she would take up the matter directly with him to be sure of his thoughts. What's your opinion on this?" Ekur says, "Hmm. I'd rather he move on without links to his past life, honestly. That seems to be what reincarnation is about, and a somewhat longer delay until he goes seems to be of less moment than hurrying him with a link to the past. But if he decides to join one, there aren't a lot of practical ways to stop them, and all of them would probably cause more trouble than it's worth. Honestly, I'd like to take it up with one of Destiny's angels, because I don't know how much it could screw him up in his next life." Ekur [to William]: Do I know any Destiny angels around to consult with? Thais says, "I'm inclined to approve of it, but we do have the time to consult further. Destiny would likely be useful in this." William [to Ekur]: Hmm. Sure, there's probably at least one assigned to the city staff. Divine Destiny strikes me as the most likely attunement for the angel to have. Ekur assumes he office has some sort of Ethereal comm gear. If not, he CelTongue's the angel in question to come down here. The GM says, "Yeah, phones function according to normal physical laws, at least within the bounds of the Domain." Ekur picks up the phone, then. From the other end of the line, you hear, "A human? Really?" and the scrabbling of papers as the young social worker gathers his materials. "Yeah, I'll be right over..." and as he leaves the phone off the hook you hear a fading rustle of robes out the door. The GM says, "Skipping ahead, the angel arrives in a few minutes and speaks with Anaba and Silk for a while in the lobby of the building. He then reports to you, adjusting the unnecessary but Role-practicing glasses as he considers his notes: "" Thais admires the glasses, and considers picking up some of her own. Useful to have something to fidget with when composing oneself. The Destiny angel says, "Okay. The, uh, the mere existence of a Soul Link isn't known to have any biasing effects beyond a close association with the ethereal in question. And the Amerind are about as close to neutral as pantheons get. It's the loss of Essence that's most troublesome. . . The Destiny angel says, ". . .if you could get the recipient ethereal to reliably swear not to request or coerce this, that would remove the biggest drag on the human's next life." Thais nods thoughtfully. "It's a pity we don't have any Bright Lilim at hand," she says. Ekur nods. "Thank you. Did you pick up anything with Divine Destiny that would indicate the Link would be a problem for this soul in particular?" The Destiny angel says, "The human in question had the destiny of standing up for minority rights in the wake of the Japanese Internment during World War II in the United States, but, um, became a codetalker instead, also known as windtalker or... right. Also avoided his fate, standard alcoholism-induced spiral common on the U.S. reservations for the native population." The Destiny angel gets angry for a moment, then refocuses on the task at hand. "Being devoted to his religion may have helped with that. Also may have blinded him to the plight of other minorities, but in my professional judgment this is less likely. Probably a small net positive. And, of course, it's better that he move on quicker. A soul in the Marches is too exposed to injury." William eek, long report. Ekur nods. "Thank you, that's been quite helpful. Anything else you think I should know?" Thais looks to Ekur. "That does seem to weigh in favor of the Soul Link, in my estimation." The Destiny angel thinks for a minute. "Not that I can think of." Ekur nods. "Thank you for your time." He nods and leaves. Thais says, "In light of what information we have so far... I'd weigh in favor of approving the Soul Link, once we extracted a suitable promise from the spirit who'd be attached to the other end. And once they've had time to discuss it themselves, of course." Ekur, when the Destiny angel leaves, says, "Yes. My conclusion is that, given an promise not to request or coerce Essence from him after he's reincarnated, the Soul Link is probably beneficial. Would you like to tell them, and would you mind if I tagged along?" Thais says, "I'd be happy to. And I certainly don't mind. I'm not entirely certain of Anaba's view of the proposal yet, only Silk's, so I'd appreciate your input." Ekur nods, stands, and gestures for Thais to take the lead. Ekur [to William]: Bouncing autoresonances -- Anaba, Cornsilk, and Thais. fadethecat [to William]: Heading back to ...wherever Anaba is, I guess. William (lobby) Thais strides on with all the cheerful confidence she usually has, towards Anaba in the lobby. "Have a minute to talk?" Silk receives the news happily and is enthusiastically willing to make the promise; she will even pay the fees for a Divine Contract service. Anaba, after digesting the proposal, is much less afraid of going forward: he feels more grounded, less like he's steeling himself to die again. Neil . o O ( Wonder how happy she'll be when he reincarnates as a woman. ) They retire to Anaba's temporary quarters to make the arrangements; Silk promises the bond will be complete before Blandine is scheduled to arrive. Ekur calls up an angel of Trade on a lobby phone for the contract, for the promise part. fadethecat [to Jesdyn]: I'm sure Silk is flexible. Besides, she's an ethereal. She can swap around what she looks like with minimal fuss! William I'll want to wrap up by 8 sharp tonight, so it's safe to say all of this goes well. Jesdyn [to fadethecat]: Sure, but when he reincarnates as a spoiled Italian girl it might shake her up a bit. Thais sends a brief update via CelTongues off to Neil, now that this end of matters has been (so far as she can tell) dealt with to a reasonable degree of mutual satisfaction. Ekur nods. Checks with the desk officer to make sure noting major is going wrong, and goes to fiddle with dreamshaping himself an appropriate outfit for the promotion. As we fast-forward, Ekur and Thais are in the luxuriously-furnished sitting room of Jack's mansion, with Matthias, Jack, a few other civic officials, and Anaba. Any Ethereal delegations that have received a scheduled meeting are waiting over in the municipal building. Symbolic dawn breaks over the Marches, as Blandine's Tower flares with a rosy light and the Domain's sky brightens from star-specked to cloud-flecked. Quietly, without fanfare or fuss, an archway appears in the side of Jack's living room. Beyond it is a palatial hall of marble, mirrors, and hundreds of delicate candles. The muezzins in the Angel's Quarter raise the call to dawn prayers. To the sound of their voices, a delicate lady with ageless features and a long, flowing dress of shimmering grey steps through the new portal. Blandine shares a professional nod with Matthias, and touches Jack and Yazz on the shoulder where they kneel. She pauses as she sees Anaba, and turns to Ekur and Thais. "Ekur," she says in poetically accented Angelic. "It has been too long." Ekur kneels. "My Lady." fadethecat [to William]: ...hmm. Thais was gonna go for a bow, this not being /her/ Superior, but would kneeling be more appropriate? William [to fadethecat]: Kneeling would definitely be appropriate. Thais kneels promptly with the rest, one hand resting on the hilt of her sword. Blandine's eyes sweep over Thais, her diamond irises reflecting the multicolored glitter of her ribbons. An eyebrow quirks, as does a corner of her mouth. "Laurence made a very fitting choice for this place, I think," she says. Thais smiles to hear this, though she does not look up. Blandine turns to the rest of the group. "If I may have the room with Ekur and his guests for the moment." Her tone is quiet but expects to be obeyed, and the group shows itself out. You are left with Ekur, Anaba, and Thais. Blandine lets out a long breath and some of the distance fades from her face once there are fewer people in the room. "Rise, please." Thais stands quickly, settling into an at-ease position before the Archangel of Dreams. Ekur stands, drawing himself up elegantly. Blandine steps toward Anaba. "You have led a long and hardworking life in my service, Ekur, and I still find you in interesting company." Ekur says, "Yes, my Lady." Blandine turns to Ekur and says, "You've grown much and lost much. It was painful to see your sacrifices being made so often, but I could not deny the contributions you made to Heaven. It would have been an insult to make your talents sleep in the Tower. This city, I think it will be good for you." Ekur says, "My Lady, I merely hope my service in this city redounds to your advantage, and the advantage of all Heaven." Blandine says, "It seems humans are already becoming attracted here. Even if not in the ways I expected. It will be good for you to be able to send them where they will be safer..." ...and with this, Ekur, you feel your Heart in the Tower sing a new note. You are now a Vassal of Dreams. Ekur bows deeply. Blandine turns her attention to Anaba (the busy Archangel enjoys pleasantries, but rarely has time for them). Anaba speaks with her briefly. She gives her approval to the Link, and he conveys to her the Navajo's request -- an exchange of embassies. Ekur , at an appropriate point, mentions that he told the Voodoun he'd mention their cooperation in the Anaba investigation. Blandine gives indication that she will consider this, couched in diplomatic terms. With Ekur's message, the business within is concluded, and she takes a deep breath, straightens up quietly, and heads out to conduct some more diplomacy. William And with that, let's draw this arc to a close. @clearlocal Do you really want to clear all of the local names and descriptions?
