----------------- Game Start ------------------- [19:19] Let's pursue that line for a bit. [19:19] Right-o. [19:20] It's quick and easy to obtain a search warrant with the fingerprint evidence -- the arraignment judge, if I recall the process correctly, can handle it within a few hours. [19:22] Carver resides in a dormitory single on campus. Housing, when you contact them, is quite willing to let you in, but does request that a campus security officer join you. [19:23] That okay? [19:23] Absolutely. [19:24] An officer is awaiting you at the front desk of Carver's dorm, and takes you upstairs, introducing himself as Dan Stevenson, "call-me-Dan." [19:26] "Sergeant Whitechurch. Bruce is fine." [19:26] Upstairs, Dan stops in front of 1027. "Here's Carver's room." He pulls out a key ring and fits one in the lock. [19:26] Inside the room, you hear something drop on the floor. [19:27] A moment later, you get the sensation of a gong ringing in your ears, except that no gong actually rang. [19:31] Bruce shakes his head to clear out the ringing. "Agh... son of a bitch." Pinching the bridge of his nose, he pauses the campas officer and raps his knuckles on the door. "Mr. Steele? Sergeant Bruce Whitechurch, Philadelphia P.D. I'd like to have a word with you." [19:32] The campus officer waits a moment. [19:32] No response comes from inside. [19:34] "Shall we, sir?" [19:35] Bruce nods at Dan. [19:35] Dan turns the key and enters the room. You see... [19:35] You see... THE FUTURE! [19:35] dead bodies.... [19:35] Aieee! [19:36] At least it's not a radioactive wasteland filled with scorpions and super mutants ;) [19:37] Aw, pity. [19:37] That I could deal with. The future, now that's some scary shit. [19:37] ...a desk with a few papers on it, including a Last Will and Testament, several signed checks, and a few textbooks still in their wrappers. A nice view outside the window. A stand-up punching bag in one corner. A flayed, multiply-pierced, heavily-branded, wide-eyed humanoid translucent THING hovering in midair above the bed! [19:38] Dan looks around. "Looks barely lived in." He flashes you a nonchalant shrug. [19:38] It's just an alien. Pay it no mind [19:39] man! It moved from the kitchen to the bedroom! [19:39] Bruce just sort of... stares, at the thing. "Er, notice anything odd here?" [19:40] The things stare back at you, evincing surprise. It walk/floats closer to you, eyeing you. [19:40] Dan: "Um, well there's a will here." [19:42] Bruce absentmindedly scratches his bestubbled cheek. "Right, the will. S'what I meant, of course." He pries his eyes from the.. whatever it is, and wanders over to the desk. "No more breakfast burritos for me," he mutters, and glances back over his shoulder. [19:43] "You can hear me, can't you?" [19:43] "He can't. Send him away. We can take care of business." [19:44] Bruce looks at the thing very much like someone that can hear something he probably shouldn't be hearing, but doesn't say a word. [19:44] Dan looks over at the wall at which you appeared to be staring. "Are you okay, sir?" [19:47] Bruce clears his throat and turns his attention back to the contents of the desk. "Yeah, sure. S'not like I'm seeing flying zombies or some other such nonsense, right?" He flashes Dan a grin and elbows him in the ribs. Just joshin', right? Right? [19:48] "Uh... sure." He blinks and looks at the papers. [19:49] The thing makes a puzzled sound, followed shortly thereafter by a note of understanding. It chuckles (that's not a pleasant sound) and begins pacing silently. It appears to be waiting. [19:51] The Will you are examining details Carver's worldy effects (not much more than the contents of the room and a bank account) and leaves them all to the Balance Charitable Trust for Veterans with Psychological Disorders. [19:52] It is signed and dated yesterday, albeit not notarized. [19:52] Bruce makes an effort of ingoring the thing, which is obviously a hallucination of some sort... what else could it be, right? He flips through the papers. "Well, it looks like wherever Mr. Steele has gone, he isn't planning on coming back, probably in quite a permanent way." [19:53] "Yes sir." [19:53] The checks are made out to various bars (memo "Tab" on each). [19:54] You hear a slight repetitive sssshing sound from the vicinity of the thing. [19:56] Bruce exhales loudly through his nose, ignoring the apparition, and starts looking through the desk for anything that might indicate travel plans-- an itinerary, notes, whatever. Not that he expects to find anything, because that's how is life goes, but he's at least making the effort. [19:58] Today: Spend time staring at Heart. Tomorrow: Spend time staring at Heart. Next week..... [19:58] Other than a few office supplies, nothing in the first drawer. Second drawer contains a list of names and words under the title, "local Host." Third drawer contains a set of knives -- two balanced for throwing, one large one sheathed. [19:59] ohboy [19:59] The closet contains clothing, including a wrestling uniform, and a fencing foil with gear. [19:59] There's precious little else in the room -- a few hygiene products, a pair of boxing gloves for the bag, bed linens. [20:00] "local Host" isn't good. Well, good for the forces of Good, as its info we need, but... :) [20:01] are you sure you're thinking of the right Side? The game is the Host vs. the Horde. [20:01] Local Host would indicate that THEY KNOW WHO YOU ARE. :) [20:02] I was thinking different context for "local Host".... as in "Host bodies suitable for natural Role takeovers" [20:02] Specifically here, that Carver knew the identities of some local members of the Host. [20:02] Fearless: Why don't we wait until and if he reads it. ;^) [20:04] "Seems Mr. Steele was an aficionado of sharp, pointy things. I assume knives like these aren't allowed on campus?" [20:04] Dan peers in the drawer. "They are as long as they're legal. The throwing knives are, I dunno about that long one." [20:05] If throwing knives aren't, two of my friends back in undergrad school were breaking the law. ;^) [20:05] actually, its legal to have any type of knife on you or in your possession [20:05] "He certainly couldn't carry it to class, though." [20:06] In the netherlands it'd be legal as long as you're not obviously carrying it or trying to use it on someone. [20:07] In Washington, I believe it's legal to carry a *sword* as long as it's in open view and not drawn. ;) [20:08] Bruce nods, and picks up the list, skimming the names. [20:08] An exasperated sound comes from the apparition. "Bored now." You see it lean over to Dan and whisper in is ear. "You're scared. Terrified. Run." [20:09] Dan's eyes open like saucers, and a whimper escapes his throat. He stumbles backward, muttering, "holyshitholyshitholyshit...", then picks himself up and flees out the door at top speed, panting. [20:10] Bruce stares as Dan retreats. "O..kay. I'm thinking this is not an hallucination." [20:10] You hear the same non-sound you heard earlier, in reverse if that's understandable. The brandings and scarrings fade from the apparition, and a perfectly unwounded young man stands in front of you. "You're new," it says in a normal human voice. "I get that." [20:14] "Listen. My name's Fear-of-Shrapnel, but you can call me Foz. I've got a job to do here, I just need to take a few things and clean any evidence up. You can have the will and stuff, and maybe we can meet later and have a chat about what you've been sensing. I can maybe help you out, and you can return the favor. Sound like a plan?" [20:17] Bruce stands away from the desk, absent-mindedly slipping the list into the pocket of his coat before patting the cloth for the reassuring feel of his sidearm beneath. "Cleaning up evidence isn't really something I'm happy to oblige, actually." He pulls aside his coat and tucks it behind the badge clipped to his belt. "But I get the feeling you probably won't care, right?" [20:18] Foz does not look happy. "I told you. I've got a job to do. There's good reasons to do this. You and a lot of other people will be a lot happier if you just leave well enough alone until you understand more about what you're dealing with." [20:19] He steps around the bed, giving you a wide berth until he's between you and the window and you are between him and the door. [20:23] "I've got a job to do, too. And it doesn't including standing aside and allowing someone, even a figment of my damned imagination to screw with evidence. So maybe you should me a favor and help me with the understanding bit before I help you into a cell for disrupting my investigation?" [20:23] Bruce tries to look like he doesn't think he's going insane. [20:24] "Figment? Figment?!" He is practically frothing at the mouth. "You ignorant flesh-puppet! You think your imagination could even *begin* to encompass me?" He flings a finger at you. "Terror!" [20:24] Oooh, habbie temper tantrum! [20:25] Bruce: You are overcome with a sensation of mad panic. Something is coming for you, NOW, something DEADLY! [20:28] Bruce cries out in horror, staggering backward and collapsing against the wall, drawing his gun, waving it around wide-eyed to defend against his imminent demise. He trembles with fright, barely able to maintain a hold on the pistol. Finally, he clambers to his feet and bolts for the door, leaving the thing behind him. [20:31] As you flee the scene, you make it out of the building before you hear, fainter and farther away this time, that same strange non-sound once more. Suddenly, on the sidewalk, with people staring at you and wondering what is going on, the fear leaves you, feeling as if you've just survived an attack by a grizzly bear. [20:31] Dan looks up at you from the piece of random statuary he's leaning against nearby. "You too, huh?" [20:32] "What the hell happened? We were looking at the will and all of a sudden I had to run like my life depended on it." [20:33] Bruce falls to a knee, clutching as his chest as if to keep his heart from bursting through his sternum. He swallows, and looks up at Dan. "Something... uh... scary," he offers weakly. [20:34] "Yah." [20:34] "So... what now?" [20:38] Bruce pushes himself to his feet, and tucks his pistol back into his coat. "I've got to go back in there-- there's something in there that I'm not seeing. But maybe you should go for backup first." [20:39] "Yargh. You're a braver man than I am, Gunga Din." He shakes his head. "I'll be back at the station. Lock the door when you leave the room, and drop in to see me and let me know just before you leave campus." [20:41] Mmmm. Hot chocolate good. [20:42] Especially for people keeping watch outside in late October in Pennsylvania, which scene we should probably switch to in a bit. Finish things up back on campus first, though. [20:43] "There's a fine line between bravery and stupidity. I'll gladly accept the former though. Do me a favor and send up a couple of officers when you get back. Just in case." [20:43] "Sure thing." He heads off. [20:45] Bruce girds his loins and goes back into the dorm and heads upstairs to Carver's room, pausing next to the door to draw his firearm, waiting a few moments. [20:46] You hear nothing inside, though a passing student gives you a fearful glance and hurries down the hall. [20:47] Echoes of that non-sound remain, but you can somehow tell that they're only echoes. The room seems to be quietly crooning to itself as it returns to a quiescent state after being roiled. [20:49] Bruce inhales deeply and peers around the doorframe, holding his pistol ready toward the floor. [20:49] No one is inside. [20:51] Bruce sighs and steps inside, already looking for evidence of the... thing's... tampering. [20:53] The knives are missing, as are the clothes and the fencing gear. The will and the checks, on the other hand, are neatly arrayed on the desk. The bed has been tossed and the mattress is slightly askew. Everything else seems to have remained in place. [20:54] Bruce tucks his pistol into his coat. "Well, this is going to be fun to report. Shit." [20:55] That's a good line to end a scene on. :^) [20:55] You read my mind. ;) [20:55] Let's pause here and let Bruce contemplate his next move; in realspace, take five while I get a drink, then when we come back switch scenes to the same time downtown, where Ed and Fearless are pondering the Swami. [21:04] If we recall, last time Fearless had called Ed and BA for help in watching the Swami -- BA for technical support, Ed for an extra pair of eyes. Right now Ed and Fearless have ensconced themselves in a corner of a park catycorner to the meeting place of the True Connectedness Society, with the Swami's residence above it. [21:05] Roit [21:06] It's about 5 in the evening. Ed is off-shift for the day. Fearless is always on-duty, of course. [21:07] Fearless meets Ed across the street from the Society. "Glad you could make it, Ed." [21:07] And BA's in the shop tinkering with somebody else's box [21:07] Edward nods. "Likewise. Anything interesting happen so far?" [21:08] "Not yet. This can be a very dull and monotonous job at times." [21:08] It's what's not happening that you're looking for. ;^) [21:09] Edward nods. [21:09] "Basically, one of the reports I came across indicated that the Swami never kept food in his apartment above the office. We need to keep it under observation for a few days, to see if people either bring him food to eat or if he visits the store every day or two." [21:10] "Gotcha." [21:10] "If neither happens, its closer proof that he's what we fear." [21:10] "How do you want to time our shifts?" [21:11] "Well, I'm back on duty in 16 hours, so if you could relieve me in 10 or so I'll be able to get some sleep in before I have to head back to Ops." [21:11] Fearless nods. [21:12] Fearless looks at his watch. "What time do you get off work?" [21:15] "About 30 minutes ago." [21:15] Fearless nods... "Okay, I'll take the day shift tomorrow, then we swap this time tomorrow?" [21:17] "Sounds good." [21:17] Fearless nods. "Give me a call if anything happens, 'k?" [21:18] Edward nods. "Will do." [21:18] Fearless heads over to the nearby market (IIRC, there is one nearby, right?) [21:18] Yeah. [21:19] Okay. I think this is something we can safely compress into a few rolls -- unless there's something particular either of you want to do in the next two days? [21:19] well, I'm going to ask the people working the market if they ever see the Swami visit [21:19] other than that, just keep watch [21:20] Okay, let's RP that real quick. [21:21] I'm not sure what you mean by market... there are a few diners across the street from the HQ. [21:21] no food stores? [21:21] convenience or otherwise? [21:21] Grocery store? Well, no reason there isn't one. Sure. [21:23] You head in -- it's perhaps a little better-quality than what would generally get called a bodega in New York, but it's about the size and selection of one. [21:23] Fearless goes in, and buys a bottle of water and a pack of cigarettes. "Tell me," he asks the cashier, "do you know the guy that runs and lives above that True Connectedness Society across the street?" [21:25] "That short Asian guy with the funky robes? He comes around every now and then, talking about his weird-a** religion. You one of his people?" [21:25] "No, just taking a look into him. He ever buy anything from here?" [21:26] Cashier blinks, then lowers his voice. "You a cop? Has he done something?" [21:26] He looks like he'd be eager for the answer to be yes... [21:27] Fearless shows his own ID. "Johnny Ferrifous, reporter for the Enquirer." Philly Enquirer is implied here. "I'm doing a look into the Society for a series of articles." [21:29] The cashier grins and becomes animated. "That guy is nucking futs, man. You can quote me on that. He worships the frigging TV, dude. He's got like four of them, you can see them in his windows. He'd love you. News people are like his idols or something." [21:30] "We've met, briefly. Does he ever buy anything in here?" [21:31] "Uh... I don't remember him ever buying much, actually. I think... I think he buys office supplies every now and then. I don't think he really shops here." [21:33] "Thanks. You say he tries to recruit people while he's here? How's that usually handled? I know some places don't like soliciters." .oO(I feared as much.) [21:34] He shrugs. "If he bothered the customers we'd probably hustle him out. He usually just pesters the clerks, though. We all know him. Everybody on this block does." [21:34] "Thanks." [21:35] Fearless pays for his purchases, then heads out, starting the shift rotation with Ed. [21:36] Okay. [21:37] For the next couple of days, the two of you sit and watch. No one seems to notice you. The Swami appears to remain in the HQ and his residence for those days. [21:38] anyone appear to bring food during those days? [21:39] As far as you can tell, no food is brought in, and from what you can see through the windows, he never opens his fridge or makes use of the dining room table. Instead, he spends hours on end working at his computer, down in the Society with his flock, or watching multiple channels of TV. [21:39] At the shift change of the third day, I ask Ed, "Okay, what type person doesn't eat at all?" [21:40] (Three days? Okay, I'm going to call this evening Thursday to evening Sunday, the 29th.) [21:40] 'k [21:40] "Someone with an IV hookup? Someone in a coma?" [21:40] "Which, as we've observed, he's neither." [21:41] "Theoretically he could be a bodhisattva who takes sustenance from the Cosmic All...." [21:41] (Hmm -- and it's probably of note that Terrence Winkle came for several hours in the afternoon-to-evening of Saturday and Sunday.) [21:42] Edward says this in a tone implying he'll expect to see airborne porcines and ethical Microsoft marketing staff before this. [21:42] "Theoretically... and which Side would you say he's actually working on?" [21:42] [21:43] "Considering their webpage, whichever side he's on, I'm not." [21:44] "I think we have enough concrete evidence to present to the Works." [21:44] Edward nods. "I'll fill Fulmes in as well." [21:46] Allright, one sec. [21:46] "Right. Any news from Nicole's side of things?" [21:47] "Not yet. I told you about the flier, didn't I?" [21:47] Since it's been three days since Bruce found that list, stuff might have happened with the 'Works or Fulmeniel. Just remember to bear that in mind. [21:47] "Yes. Presenting a truth as a lie... Interesting take on it." [21:48] "And in my business, something you have to watch for. Something I had to do when reporting about Xav." [21:48] "Sort of ego-style... As in, 'they'll never figure this one out even if I yell it in their face'" [21:48] Edward nods. [21:49] "Well, I'm headed for the Works, to present my case. You coming?" [21:50] and... shall we wait for the rest of the crew to catch up to us before giving our evidence to the 'Works? [21:50] Probably a good idea. Lemme think. [21:51] Everyone meets up at the works! [21:52] Bruce would have checked in at least once with Ellis, I think [21:52] The next major thing for Nicole is on the night of the party with Ellis, BA is probably extracting information on a regular basis from whatever the bot-cams have recorded. Yeah, Bruce and any repercussions with Ellis are the big thing right now. [21:53] Idly... can we assume that I've been asking Works folk about the War, and getting information on the opposition, like Ed has been? [21:53] Sure. That'll also give you a reason to be there late Sunday. :^) [21:53] I think most of us except Bruce are able to swing that. [21:53] So that I have some general knowledge, not just Catholic dogma, which I as a player don't really know? ;) [21:53] Cool. Thanks. [21:53] Okay, so what's my excuse? [21:54] I know I had Fearless ask the angels a few questions once... I'm sure he wouldn't've stopped there [21:54] Same? They did broach Soldierhood with you. [21:54] Fearless and Ed have a bigger reason to go already. :^) [21:55] katster nods. [21:56] katster incharacterizes then. [21:56] katster is now known as Nicole [21:56] All that leaves is BA, if he wants to show up. [21:56] Edward OOCly shakes BA awake [21:57] Perhaps as technical support with Johnny'n'Ed's evidence? [21:57] I think UL needs a character more in tune with what's going on than BA... someone more, I dunno, personable? [21:57] and if the word "Remnant" comes out of his fingers.... ;) [21:57] At any rate, his player looks asleep at the moment. [21:57] you'll bludgeon said fingers. [21:58] Bruce, have you had any ideas as to what to do next? [21:58] I'm here [21:59] ICly, I don't think there's anything he can do for this. Getting his and Nicole's equipment ready for Hallowe'en is eating up most of his free time [22:00] And I was actually thinking more of a Grigori than a Remnant [22:02] At this point Bruce is still trying to decide how to report an hallucination tampering with a police investigation. At some point he was going to obtain a copy of Carver's class schedule and informally chat with his instructors and classmates to see if they have any idea where he might have disappeared to. [22:03] You can do that on Friday, in fact. [22:04] With the warrant, the University releases his schedule -- besides Prof. Ellis, he has four other instructors in various history-major courses. [22:04] Also check his school records for family/next of kin and contact them at some point later. [22:04] We can tell the GM is not a history major. ;) [22:05] heh [22:05] If the history major would care to provide me with five sophomore classes for a history major, including one PE elective and another core course, I'd be happy to list those. :^) [22:06] Hmmm. What kind of history? :) [22:06] I'm not a professor, I'm staff, routed through the athetic director. ;) [22:06] Specializing in military. [22:07] Bruce: Family... hmm. Parents are listed in a small town in the middle of Pennsylvania. A mother and a father both signed his admissions papers. [22:07] Something on Nazi Germany? ;) [22:07] 20th Century World History to 1950; United States Civil War; [22:08] There's apparently a terrific course on it here... [22:08] The Napoleonic Era [22:08] Hmmm, I'd have to look at Penn's offerings to see exactly, but if he was here, I'd say one of his four core history courses (one each from Western Civ, World Civ, US, and World), a polysci lowerdiv class, his physical science (rocks for jocks or something), one of the milsci classes, and then fencing. :) [22:09] maybe toss in a Philosophy course that covers Sun Tzu? [22:09] but that's me randomly speculating here. [22:09] Enh, you tend to really get specialized in the junior and senior years. Sophomore, he'd still be doing prereqs. [22:10] I think ESU offered a course on Sun Tzu's writings as a sophmore-level Philosophy course... [22:10] I was *fast*, and I still wasn't taking upperdiv courses until spring of sophomore year. [22:10] Bruce: his four professors are available at various points during the day. Most of them agree that Carver was knowledgeable, though not studious; had a tendency to be confrontational with other students; and generally was a prick. The exception is his milsci teacher, who said he enjoyed the discussions of strategic theory. None of them, however, had seen any unusual behavior in the previous days. [22:10] Anyway, I'd have to look closer, but I was just giving you a hard time, Will. :) [22:11] Works for me. [22:16] Well, finding that dead end, I'll have the papers in his room collected and head back to my office to give the parents a phone call before trying to work out my report. [22:17] Assuming that their contact info is in his records. [22:18] It is. [22:19] The phone rings several times. It rings several times, then picks up and a man's voice answers. "Hello?" [22:20] "Hello. This is Sergeant Bruce Whitechurch of the Philadelphia Police Department. Am I speaking to Mr. ?" [22:20] Steele. [22:20] "Yes, that's me. You must be calling about our son." [22:21] Well, yeah. ;) [22:24] Bruce pauses. "...Er, yes. We need to question your son and I was hoping you might have heard from him in the last few days." [22:26] "He contacted us a few days ago, saying he was dropping out of college and going away. He didn't explain where or why, only that he didn't want us to worry. Hardly helps, that does. Still, we've put through the paperwork to withdraw him. I expect it will be processed soon." [22:29] "Is there really any reason for police to be involved?" [22:31] Bruce sighs inaudibly. It figures. "I have a warrant for his arrest. He's wanted for questioning in the breaking and entering of one of his instructors' homes. He gave you no indication of where he was going?" [22:33] "I'm afraid not. Still, we believe he can handle himself. He's a tough man. He's also not the kind of person to go around breaking into people's homes, at least not unless there were a very good reason." [22:33] You know, for a father whose son is missing and may be dead, you notice this guy doesn't seem very concerned.... [22:34] So I see. [22:34] not uncommon in military families, though... [22:34] Yeah, it's a military "family" allright. [22:34] or those with really, really disciplinarian fathers. [22:35] Although that kind of father would explode at the first hint of their son being possibly involved in something criminal. [22:36] "The reason for the break-in is one of the things I'd sort of like to question him for, sir," Bruce says, trying to suppress his sarcasm. "I'm also dealing with a possible murder here. Apparently he tried to call 911 shortly after the break-in." He offers that as a test of concern. You never know. [22:37] unless criminal activities run in the family... [22:39] *pause* "I see." *pause* "You said he had broken into someone's house. Have you considered the homeowner as a suspect? He would probably have more information than us; obviously he's involved somehow. We haven't had much contact with Carver since he went off to school." [22:41] brb [22:42] b [22:44] Bruce makes a note about the apparent disinterest in his son's disappearance and possible murder. "That consideration hasn't been ruled out sir, but I'd prefer to hope that your son is simply missing for the time being. Thank you for your time, Mr. Steele. I'll be sure to contact you again if I learn anything about your son's status." [22:44] "Please do." *click* [22:45] Bruce sets the phone in the cradle. "That was productive." [22:49] Bruce reaches into his pocket for his lighter, as he always does when he's trying to think, and lays his hand on the list from Carver's room. He pulls it out, having completely forgotten about it in his bout of terror. [22:53] local Host [22:53] Leader: Philadelphia, Mercurian of same. Friend, Stone. Mobile.
