Ethos Statement for Ensign Jeff Hurley I am not fighting a stuffed animal, a children's television show host, a corporate symbol, or a desperate actor in a fur suit. I am fighting a set of ideas. I am fighting the shadows of truth that masquerade as comfort, exposing the concepts that cannot bear scrutiny to the harsh light of day, and I'm doing it one story at a time. I write stories about the Hell Wyrm, but he's not my target. I write stories against his summoners/creators, but they're not my target. My target is everyone who's ever thought that the damnable show was teaching anything. I've spent half my life studying religion, philosophy, and common values. I've taken all the stuff "Dilbert" makes fun of and found the good in it. I'm a vegetarian. I've done self-hypnosis, creative visualization, group-consensus modeling, serial speaking and almost every other system of self-help that has been degraded, drug through the mud, and stripped of all value in the over-simplifying, cloying children's shows of which the Hell Wyrm is the worst. And frankly, I'm more than angry about it. I find the reduction of the systems and beliefs of my life to sound bites to be every bit as offensive as trying to sell the kids BAF rosaries as good luck charms. These ideas pulled me out of the "let someone else think for you" trap, and I won't stand by while someone uses the underpinnings of my religion to make a fast buck and further manipulate the masses. I will do everything in my power to satirize, marginalize, poke fun at, and discredit anything that turns instruments of freedom into instruments of control. I invite you to come along with me. And while I'm at it, read "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People." It's worth it.
